FAQs

What is UVC light?

Ultraviolet light is the form of light in the electromagnetic spectrum lying between visible light and X-rays. Sun rays contain ultraviolet rays, and we are exposed to these rays daily, although levels are very low due to most of the absorption by the ozone layer. The wavelength of UVC ranges between 200 nm to 300 nm. At this wavelength, the ultraviolet light acts as germicidal, which means that it is capable of killing microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, molds, and other pathogens).

Disinfection with UVC light has been in practice since the mid-20th century after the Nobel prize was awarded to Niels Finsen in 1903 for treating tuberculosis and lupus vulgaris of the skin using UV light. It is widely used as a disinfectant, sterilizer, and sanitizer in medical facilities.

Is it safe?

Yes, UVC is safe on most surfaces. In fact, it is so effective that it's now being used to combat covid-19 and other harmful pathogens in government buildings, public transportations, and hospitals.

UltraKlēn's UVC device is the safest choice when sanitizing contaminated surfaces with no chemicals, no mercury, and no ozone. Do not use it on humans, animals, or plants.

*Materials like rubber, plastic, and wood may discolor after prolong exposure to UVC light.

Chemical vs UVC light

UVC light has been proven to kill a much more extensive range of harmful microorganisms than commercial chemical products. For instance, UV light can kill spores and mold, but many chemical resources cannot. It is also a dry method, meaning you never have to worry about moisture fostering new mold growth later on.

Another reason why this method is so effective, and why healthcare industries are heavily using UVC to sterilize, is because it can destroy antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Since UVC light is a physical method, bacteria can’t build an immunity to it. This is a massive benefit for people, especially for healthcare workers, because they can be confident that all viral and bacterial management is in full control, and nothing will manifest.
